TAIWAN

Taiwan is home to almost 24 million people and is known for modern cities, traditional Chinese temples, hot springs resorts and dramatic mountainous terrain.  The national economy of Taiwan is the 7th largest economy in Asia and ranks as 18th in the world by gross domestic product (GDP).

Among its main trade partners are mainland China, Hong Kong, and the United States. Taiwan positions itself as a gateway to mainland China and Asia Pacific. Geographically, it finds itself between the world’s second largest economy, China, and the third largest, Japan.

Despite this economic success, Taiwan is not a country without its share of poor and orphans.  Over 700,000 people make less than minimum wage, and there are dozens of orphanages of children with various and serious needs.
Over 2.3% of the population is indigenous and the economic disparity between the village and urban schools resulted in imposing many social barriers, which prevent many from moving beyond vocational training and into the unskilled or low-skilled sector of the urban workforce.
