Africa is the world's second largest and second most-populous continent (behind Asia in both categories). With over to 1.3 billion people, it accounts for 16% of the world's population and is the poorest continent on earth by
a long shot. With the exception of three, 28 of the poorest countries in the world are in Africa and the average population is the youngest of all continents with a median age of 19.7 (the worldwide median age is 30). Here are some painful, yet important facts about Africa:

Madagascar English School
Madagascar is a French speaking country in Africa, but having knowledge of the English language is a valuable skill to have with the amount of tourism the country sees. The Michelle Chiou Foundation hosts two classes per week for local students to help them learn and improve their English.
Mara Moriah Kileleoni Child Care School
Located in Maasai Mara, the Michelle Chiou Foundation has funded the construction of a much-needed kindergarten class, complete with desks, classroom supplies, books and the teacher’s salary. The Michelle Chiou Foundation also responded to a hygiene crisis and funded the construction of new toilets for the students in order to improve the sanitary conditions.
Future Stars School
Located in the heart of the Kibera Slum, Africa's largest slum the Future Stars School is comprised of 68 students from ages three to thirteen. Some of the pupils are orphans and live in the premises. The Michelle Chiou Foundation provides monthly support for the teachers and an incentives for the students to come to school every day.
Amaya Light of Life School
The Michelle Chiou Foundation was made aware of a need for more classrooms at the Amaya Light of Life School in Amaya, Kenya. The Michelle Chiou Foundation responded by providing funds to build two classrooms, as well as funds for desks, chalkboards, classroom supplies and teacher support.
